Restaurant Review: Masala Zone, Piccadilly Circus

Piccadilly Circus, in all candour, lives up to its name—it's a bustling hub that many Londnrs navigate through, aiming to avoid the inevitable jostling and exasperated sighs. Those familiar with the location tend to skirt around its periphery, observing the vibrant spectacle from stage left and right, like an assemblage at a theatrical performance. For us locals, it's often a non-participatory affair. That is, until now.

Plush interiors combine with sensory textures, all under the gaze of a resplendent 19th-century mosaic ceiling that leaves you breathless.

Welcome to the newcomer, Masala Zone, nestled in the iconic Criterion building and the latest venture from MW Eat (known for Chutney Mary’s, Amaya, Verraswamy). This establishment a gastronomic voyage. Stepping into Masala Zone, Piccadilly Circus, feels like an entry into a Maharaja’s dining chamber—a sanctuary where pretences are left at the door, and patrons dine like royalty.

The outside Circus becomes a distant memory as the restaurant's design deftly whisks you away to India. Plush interiors combine with sensory textures, all beneath a resplendent 19th-century mosaic ceiling that leaves you breathless.

From the moment you're welcomed by the affable staff, you're transported into an Indian reverie. Plush cushions, intricate tassels, booths adorned in gold, bespoke artwork, and preserved features from this Grade-listed building all contribute to an atmosphere of extraordinary charm. And then, the culinary journey begins.

These are plates that elicit a contented sigh, prompting thoughts of 'I wish I could recreate this at home.'

The menu weaves layers of spice, texture, warmth, and flavour to create an authentic Indian feast. Each dish exudes a rich heritage, a sense of home, as if you're savouring secret recipes passed down through generations. These are plates that elicit a contented sigh, prompting thoughts of 'I wish I could recreate this at home.'

You'll definitely be returning for more, as every dish is an ode to flavour, from the Angrezi Cheese Balls with Green Chilli, to the delectable Butter Chicken, and the aromatic Black Dal. The menu is a tapestry of intricate spice layering.

Masala Zone also offers a thoughtfully curated selection of cocktails that harmonise perfectly with their menu, including the zesty Indian Sunset—a blend of Indian spiced white rum, Aperol, lime, and mango syrup.

The next time you pass through Piccadilly Circus, consider a pause, a moment to recalibrate, and revel in this oasis of calm. Masala Zone offers an immersive exploration of Indian flavours, underscored by refinement and elegance—a welcome retreat from the bustling Circus outside.
