Ufuoma Essi: All That You Can Leave Behind
A static shot the colour of blood. A woman singing, or perhaps screaming. It feels impossible to separate the two, or the emotions inspired by the film installations of Ufuoma Essi. Inspired by the appropriation and subjugation of black women in the mediums of film, music and entertainment, Essi turns the tables. By reappropriating footage and using the same techniques that have allowed for injustice and theft, she instead creates a whole narrative, one that conveys the collective experience of black women everywhere.Enthral yourself in her three dimensional film experience at the Public Gallery.
