OCCUPY THE CITY #7: Serena Brown

@_serenabrown is an up and coming photographer based in London who’s intimate and powerful style is distinctly her own. Much of her work focuses on identity and representation, and we were so excited to sit down with her and discuss her practice in more detail.

We began by asking Serena what being London based means to her. “I think living in London has always influenced by practice, everything I shoot is community focused and people based. I grew up in Brentford, and the interesting mix of characters there were hugely influential, it’s such a multi-cultural environment to grow up in and it has steered my work towards finding beauty in those every day moment.

Serena’s work so intimately captures the subjects and moments in front of her, and she has a clear eye for teasing out those small details that convey so much meaning.

We spoke to her about the impact of the pandemic on her practice. “It’s been interesting, because I quit my job February 2020 to go freelance, and I suppose I’ve never experienced what freelance was like pre-pandemic. The first 3 months were really scary, all the jobs I had lined up fell through, but after that I found a new normal and adapted to the situation in front of me. Shooting became more difficult and complicated with safety measures but I think I was just determined to make it work however I could.

Finally we asked Serena about our tagline for this series, and what it made her think of. “I would say that for me, it’s about embracing people’s differences and how we can learn from eachother, making an effort to sit down and take in other people’s stories.”
