OCCUPY THE CITY #2 Chloë Roach

Our second artist spotlight in this series is the wonderful @chloeroach_art ! Based in Walthamstow, Chloe describes herself as creating ‘nuggets of the surreal’ and it was a privilege to get to chat to her about her unique creative world.

We began our interview by discussing the strengths and drawbacks of London life, with Chloë admitting the challenges of trying to balance a full time career, as well as make space for her artistic endeavours. “It’s different from elsewhere because you have to balance so much, constantly fighting a battle of how to priorities your art alongside making a living.”

The role that COVID has played in Chloë’s artistic career is one which has afforded her perspective, demonstrating to her the importance of seizing moments and opportunities head on. “Being isolated made me crave art in a new way, I began to use Instagram to reach out to people, and I’ve actually been producing more work! I had a friend in the art world who died during the pandemic, and I think that really pushed me to realise that only time I could rely on was the present.”

COVID also allowed her a refreshing new outlook on the natural world, “Before COVID I’d always seen myself as a city person, I’d never felt much connection to the natural world before. But in lockdown I felt acutely aware of its power, which has shifted into my most recent work which explores the concept of being a child of nature, and the connections between us internally and with our surroundings."

We finished the interview by asking her about our series tagline, 'Occupy the City with Original Ideas', and what this made her think of. “When you’re living in a period of gentrification, art gets pushed further out of the centre of the city. And so I hope that by learning from the pandemic and recognising the necessity of the arts, London can uphold its historical importance within the artistic world."
